Musings on Gestation and Faith
“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
C.S. Lewis
I stumbled upon these words just as I am about to birth my first book of poems, long after a rich and fulfilling literary life might well have been over.
Coming from one of the 20th century’s great storytellers and spiritual geniuses, whose tales of Narnia and his many talks and writings on the Christian faith have been luminaria along my path, I was deeply moved and grateful to be reminded that faith – even unearned, irrational faith and hope — continue to find a toehold in our baffling world.
Today marks the end of a high-octane 10 week period for me – known in the book industry as the “pre-order” period — in which I sent out hundreds of emails and posted lots of images of my book, asking friends and perfect strangers to take the leap of faith with me. I have invited all of you to order a book you have no reason to need or perhaps even have space for on your crowded shelves. And you have heeded, out of friendship and love for me. In a world that seems given over to resentments, revenge, and power plays that wound so many and for so long, this generosity moves me beyond words.
Thank you, thank you, for your interest, your support, and your immense kindness. I’d like to hope that every “dream” that writers, artists, and seekers “of a certain age” dream are met with a similar open-hearted welcome!
The gestation is over. In early February – right at the start of National Poetry Month!!! – the book will be birthed and arrive at your door. I hope that it will reward your faith, and enkindle your hope.
Wishing you peace and grace,
Kathleen
